The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (2006)

I’d be worried if I worked in a lab with someone called Dr Henry Jekyll, especially if he had an angry friend working in the basement called Edward Hyde. The people in this movie don’t worry, not even when young women in the neighbourhood are killed. They only become concerned when the head of the company is ripped apart. I guess they have never heard of Robert Louis Stevenson.

Tony Todd has already proved himself competent in horror with his starring role as the Candyman. This movie allows him to show his versatility and range, from the mild mannered Jekyll to the menacing Hyde. Todd is really all this low budget reworking of the classic has going for it, and he is very good. The scariest thing in the movie is not the raping, bullying, murdering, gloating Hyde, it’s Tracy Scoggins. She is trying so hard to remain young that her excessive dieting, cosmetic surgery, and make-up have made her something frightful. Her anti-aging desperation also seems to have drained her of her acting ability, which was never great to start with. It’s hard not to laugh at some of her (over) reactions in the movie.
